What's the deal with file types and conversions
Is there a simple software to create file conversions?
A question like this is asked of me in one form or another so I decided to do a bit of research and save some of you a lot of time. Lets face it the list of file types is getting larger all the time and with all those programmers out there it not going to stop very soon.
Remember as long as you are staying within the general formats like vector or bitmap images the process is simple and the software is easy to find. Although when you start to get into some of the more rare formats it can get a bit difficult. If the files are compressed that introduces a unique issue, the most common compressed files are those with extensions like .ZIP, .SIT and .TAR. These extensions represent popular compression formats for the PC, Macintosh, and UNIX respectively. They may be single files or groups of files that have been bundled together into a single archive.
I use a site from time called Zamzar and it works for almost all my needs and the best part is it's at no cost to you. After you fill out the short form they send it to your email and with out a lot of junk email getting sent back your way. There is a file size limit 1MB with the basic service but you can buy Zamzar's full service and it's affordable.
If your looking for something a bit more common try Adobe Photoshop or Macromedia Fireworks both can be found within the Adobe CS4 package or purchased as a separate application. As a quick note when useing microsoft products with files like bmp or emz, wmz, pct or pict it's best to stick with a microsoft application for the conversion. When you have a PC file and you want to convert it to a mac file most file types work fine without any conversion. But remember Mac's don't load a .exe file so you can create a pdf file the high resolution is for print and low quality for the web.
